“This is a self-portrait of me with my cat.”This is a self-portrait of me with my cat. I experimented with a more abstract style instead of strict realism. Working on a black canvas, I left the darkest areas unpainted so the surface itself could become shadow. Strong contrast is deeply satisfying for me to create and to look at. The subject is simple—me and my pet—but each color was chosen carefully to keep the painting visually alive. Read the story
“I painted this after visiting Las Vegas in 2023.”I painted this after visiting Las Vegas in 2023. The vivid luxury of a city thriving in a vast desert inspired me. The green, resilient succulent stands for the vitality and strength of our society, while the surrounding red rocks become the valley’s fire. The work holds the contrast between the paradise of Las Vegas and the harsh environment waiting just beyond it. Read the story
“This experimental painting combines a Canadian landscape, a red spider lily, and abstract elements.”This experimental painting combines a Canadian landscape, a red spider lily, and abstract elements. The message is the cycle of nature: the flower grows near the water and flourishes, then its energy returns to the river, the ground, and the trees. Golden lines symbolize that flow of energy and the cycle of rebirth. Read the story
“Ink conveys the discoloration of dead coral reefs around the world.”Ink conveys the discoloration of dead coral reefs around the world. Tree roots made from yarn show people on land reaching deep into the ocean and extracting resources until the consequences kill marine life. I created the piece as both a memorial and a call to action for coral reefs lost worldwide. The process drawings and glass coral study helped me understand the structure and growth patterns of coral. “This self-portrait places me at the center, dividing the composition.”This self-portrait places me at the center, dividing the composition. Above is a leopard—my spirit animal and a symbol of the boldness I aspire to. Below is reality: I struggle, fall, and do not always get what I desire. Together, the two halves represent a life cycle that keeps repeating as the future glazes over my present state. Read the story

“This mixed-media piece preserves my childhood.”This mixed-media piece preserves my childhood. As my teenage years came to an end, I gathered old toys, drawings, and photographs to hold those memories together. Inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night, I created a flowing sky where dolls drift like constellations, then encased the work in a plastic layer to suggest memories being protected and concealed. “A white lily is examined through scientific and conceptual magnification.”A white lily is examined through scientific and conceptual magnification. Prints reveal the insect on its leaves, vascular systems, petals, and seed pockets—the reality visible through a magnifying glass. The lower-right image looks for a deeper message, drawing on classical ballet to connect the purity and movement of dance with the life inside a flower. Read the story
“Inspired by Tang dynasty jewelry, this wedding crown reflects women’s historical experience within patriarchal traditions.”Inspired by Tang dynasty jewelry, this wedding crown reflects women’s historical experience within patriarchal traditions.
